Hirofumi Hamada is a professor at the University of Tsukuba and Director of the Department of Education since April 2020. He has served in a number of key positions in education-related academic societies in Japan.

He served as President of the Japanese Society for the Study of Educational Administration in 2015-2018, and has been President of the Japanese Society for the Study on Teacher Education since 2020 to the present. He has also served as an Affiliate Member of the Science Council of Japan and as a Corporate Board Member of the Japanese Educational Research Association since 2017 to the present.

His research interests include professional development of teachers and school leaders, school improvement, and teacher and principal leadership in school management. While his primary research area is school management, he has also been involved in teacher education practice and research for many years and has published many articles and books in Japan.
