Larsen

Dr. Judy Larsen is an Associate Professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, where she teaches mathematics courses in the Upgrading and University Preparation Department, and mathematics education courses in the Teacher Education Department. She also leads professional development workshops with in-service educators locally and nationally in Canada. She has been awarded the D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning from the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education as well as the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of the Fraser Valley for her commitment to innovating ways to engage learners in mathematics and mathematics teaching methods. As a researcher and practitioner, she takes deep interest in environments that occasion mathematical thinking and engagement, the role of autonomy in classrooms, affective aspects of learning mathematics, mathematics teacher professional growth, and self-organized professional learning environments via social media. At the heart of her interests, lies her ongoing participation in implementing, sharing about, and discussing Dr. Peter Liljedahl’s ‘Building Thinking Classrooms’ framework both as a researcher and a practitioner. By bridging theory and practice, she finds personal growth as an educator and leader. Judy also holds an online presence around mathematics education on Twitter, via @JudytaLarsen, and on her website, judylarsen.ca.
